Hello,

My name is Melissa Gately and I am a sophomore at UMass Amherst. I am a Journalism major and hopefully by the end of this semester I will be able to declare a secondary major in Communication and a minor of Kinesiology.

I am an avid writer, and always writing in my daily journal or reading. I recently signed up for three triathlons this summer and my current interest is reading about proper nutrition. This made me thinking about possibly being a journalist that writes about nutrition like the author Nancy Clark who wrote a sports nutrition guidebook for active people.

Nowadays it seems people are trying to be more health cautious and nutrition seems to be the newest ‘interest’ in the social world since it’s perceived everywhere these days. Also I recently applied for an internship this summer at my local hometown newspaper. Although I still seem unsure in what I want to do, I do know that journalism is a true interest of mine.

I grew up in Melrose MA about twenty minutes away from Boston. I am a fairly active person, I enjoy the outdoors whether it’s running, riding my bike or swimming. I recently invested in an expensive camera that I desperately need to learn how to work. Another interest of mine is documentaries and I would love to travel and write after college especially while I’m young. I enthusiastically want to study abroad before I graduate.

Interesting facts about me is I swim every Tuesday and Thursday night with the UMass Masters program and mainly everyone I swim with is 40+. Also I am a mentor to an adopted child from the local Amherst community that is associated with Big Brother and Big Sister. I too, was also adopted at the age of two from the Philippines and because I was adopted at the age of two, I have and still struggle with proper grammar. Another fact about me is that even though I have an iPhone, I am guilty to say that I do not use my iPhone to it’s full advantage, meaning rarely do I go on Facebook and I just recently got a Twitter and is completely new to the Twitter scene. But with time I hope to get better and I look forward to Multimedia Journalism 397 in improving my multimedia journalistic skills.
